The Multimedia Content Journalist I (MCJ) role is responsible for pitching, researching, writing, shooting, and editing local news stories, including news-of-day and feature packages, for linear and digital platforms. You will work closely with production staff to deliver accurate and timely news coverage to our audience.


This role requires a strong sense of curiosity, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work under pressure in fast-paced on-the-go environments. The ideal candidate will have a passion for journalism and storytelling, with the ability to identify compelling stories and present them in a clear and engaging manner.

WHAT OUR MULTIMEDIA CONTENT JOURNALIST EXPECT FROM THE ROLE

  • Pitch, research, write, shoot and edit local news stories, including news-of-day and feature packages, for linear and digital platforms.
  • Generate original story ideas and develop fresh angles/perspectives on those stories.
  • Develop sources for original reporting.
  • Deliver on-air content, including live reports during breaking news events and VO/SOTs, for linear and digital platforms, up to 40% depending on editorial priorities.
  • Shoot, write, and edit VOs and VO/SOTs.
  • Fulfill on-air duties demonstrating energy, confidence, professional appearance and voice quality.
  • Collaborate with local and remote production staff as well as work well independently.
  • Meet required deadlines according to Executive Producer’s instructions.
  • Manage general upkeep of assigned company vehicle and equipment.
  • Responsible for representing Spectrum News in a professional manner.
  • Adhere to Spectrum News’s standards and practices. 

Required Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, Communications or related field or comparable television work experience
  • Experience: 
    • Television News Reporting experience – 1 year required, 2 years preferred
  • Skills:
    • Turn news stories for linear and digital on a daily basis
    • Demonstrate superb news judgement
    • Effective writing skills and strong knowledge of AP style
    • Solve the challenges that come with dynamic news coverage in field environment
    • Ability to anticipate situations and meet strict deadlines Interpersonal skills and excellent collaboration skills
    • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and interact with all personnel within the organization
    • Knowledge of current events and industry trends
    • Attention to detail
    • Familiarity with the local market
    • Ability to work rapidly and accurately
    • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to build relationships
    • Proven ability to report live stories
    • Requires adaptability, enthusiasm, initiative and a positive approach to problem solving
  • Technical Skills:
    • Shoot and edit video for television in a timely fashion
    • Knowledge of social media platforms
  • Travel:
    • Ability to drive a company vehicle to and from assigned location while obeying all traffic laws
    • Valid driver’s license for authorized driving in the State of residence
    • Drives company vehicle to and from different locations in a safe manner by obeying all traffic laws
  • Schedule:
    • Ability work weekends and holidays
    • Ability to work under time pressure deadlines and willing and able to work different shifts or longer shifts due to "breaking news" and severe weather emergencies
  • Working Conditions:
    • Work inside in a climate-controlled environment and outside throughout the year and may be subjected to various weather conditions that could include extreme heat or cold conditions
    • Ability to distinguish colors and discern sounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a 24-hour news channel
